The world's greatest conversation

In this age of information overload that we are living in, if ever there was a single conversation that I would recommend for anyone looking for the most important piece of life giving dialogue. A conversation with power to save your very soul. One that promises eternal salvation. So powerful it addresses a simple question to deliver the core mark of salvation. Asked by a man just like you and I. Open for all to read and understand for as long as we have the word of God. It would be the great conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus in which the Lord Jesus Christ answers a question that we should all know the answer to. That conversation is John 3.

Now let me tell you about this great dialogue:

There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Then Nicodemus asks Jesus what many of us have often wondered: I am a grown man/woman, what does this mean? How is this even possible? Let’s take a look:

Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Right, so Jesus mentions two things: Water and …Spirit. Then He explains the later part, here is what he says:

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

Wow! Are these things too wonderful for our human minds to comprehend? In Nicodemus’s bewilderment, Jesus further goes on to say:

“If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?”

This great conversation can be read in full in John 3

To recap:

  • What must a man be? - Born Again

  • How can a man enter the kingdom of God? – must be born of water and spirit

  • What does it mean to be born of the Spirit? – “Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?” (John 3:10)

Most of us have been baptised or heard about water baptism as a step of faith to being born again. How often do we deeply think about the second part - Spirit?

“When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Acts 8:14)

Let us pray to God to grant us the revelation of what it truly means to be born again (water and Spirit) for without which we cannot enter the Kingdom of God. (John 3:5)
