Return to love before the King returns

If Jesus was coming soon then …. he is coming sooner now…

“Repent! for the Kingdom of God is at hand” Jesus ANNOUNCED to the crowds in his first teaching after baptism and 40 days of fasting in the desert where he was tempted by the devil.

I believe, our focus when we study this teaching should be less on when the Kingdom is coming (that is a given, only God knows) but more on the caution upon the individual. Upon every single one of us. To repent. It is a message from a loving father saying look, I am warning you of what is ahead, I am giving you time, make straight your ways, check the conditions of your heart for I will come back very soon for my people. Even while you are here on earth live right for surely I am coming soon.

The Bible reads in 1 Thessalonians 5:2-4 “For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief.”

Our world today faces real issues that have opened up deep debate and divisions depending on what one’s politics is. Words are exchanged, fingers pointed like never before. Imagine if Jesus were to appear right now this very instant! in the twinkling of an eye , what would he say to you , to me, to each one of us ? Would we be found in right standing? The Bible says, we will all give an account (Romans 14:12, 2 Corinthians 5:10) Something tells me that in the same way our loving saviour and friend Jesus gave us that pre-warning about his second coming, he has already given us the questions ahead of time for when we stand before him on that day of judgement to give account.

Friends I believe much of what we will be asked will be flowing from the Lord’s greatest command – Love.

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Mathew 22: 36-40)

So , I believe that on that day, before we are asked of what are political positions were, we will be evaluated based on the Lord’s greatest command and teachings. Did we truly love? Did we love our enemies and pray for them? Did we make disciples of the nations? Did we feed the hungry? Did we speak the truth in love? Did we pray? Did we fast? Did we give ? ….. and all that the Lord taught us through his teachings and through the apostles.

The heated debates on the world political stage today have led us to believe that opinion is better than love. Daily we are choosing the power to be right over the power to love. If any one says something that we disagree with, we are quick to push our best wit to prove them wrong and us right even to the extent of digging up historical facts to back our argument. Now of course open debate has it’s value and the idea is not to say nothing in times when deception is rampant and evil roams close. But I believe we as Christians need to hold close to the Lord’s very first announcement and also keep in our hearts Jesus’s words… “heaven and earth will pass away but my words will never pass away.” All the arguments will pass away, useless and forgotten along with everything else only the word of the Lord will stand.

The times we are living in may be exciting and troubling but for the Lord, there is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9). The only thing that can be made new are our hearts when we open them up to Christ and give in to love according to the Lord’s command. It feels good to be right, but this only brings a temporary moment of bliss at the cost of love. Why did the Lord say pray for and love your enemies? because he knew days like these would come, when the wolves would be so outspoken and dangerous in a way that would turn his people’s hearts to darkness.

Friends don’t give in, let us fight for love. Love is the greatest command. Love covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8). Our final destination is more important than who’s right or who’s wrong about the issues of this world.

“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,” Philippians 2:12.

We cannot put our confidence in mere men, they too shall make mistakes, let our hope and trust be in the Lord. Let us follow the example of Christ, when he left the wilderness, John had been put in prison, he did not head straight to the prison to demand the release of John, he did not protest and use his power to rescue John whom he referred to as great, no, he went forth about the father’s business because he was confident of God’s plan. He also knew the prison could not hold John. Remember God is sovereign and Jesus is coming soon, it matters not what you or I think about the events of the world , God is in control of that. What matters is our love status.. how will the king find me when he arrives?

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” Matthew 24:36
