Knowing Jesus

August 25, 2019

Who am I? Why do you follow me?

What would our immediate response be to these seemingly obvious questions if the Lord himself were to ask us. I would like to challenge you to take a moment and ponder your response.

As followers of Jesus Christ, I believe we are to consistently and intentionally seek to know him. Our faith walk in discovering Jesus is a daily experience. In the book of Corinthians, Paul puts it this way; “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." (1 Corinthians 2:2).

Knowing Jesus, I believe is the key that unlocks not just our identity but also our destiny.

Recently, a few friends of mine and I embarked on a 21-day journey to digging deeper into the word of God especially the gospels of Mathew, Mark, Luke and John with the prayerful intention of collecting a Holy Spirit led revelation into the person of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.

The start of our journey was framed by Mathew 6:17 in which Peter answers correctly when Jesus poses this crucial question to his disciples “Who do you say that I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the son of the living God.”

As it appears, Peter’s ability to discern who Jesus truly is, although revealed to him by Father in heaven, earned him a new name, a position and power.

“Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, [a name/ identity] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it [position in Christ]. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven [power in Christ]

Friends, I believe these same spiritual blessings that were poured out unto Peter when he caught the true revelation of the Messiah, the son of the living God, are available to each and every believer in Christ Jesus who seeks to truly know Him. Mathew 6:33 reads, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”.

Think about Solomon, when asked by God “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon’s answer, “Give me wisdom and knowledge…”  Colossian 2:1 tells us that in Christ is hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge and 1 Corinthians 1: 24 reads, “but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and wisdom of God.”

Later on, we read that God was pleased with Solomon’s request, and together with it granted him, wealth, possessions and honour (2 Chronicles 1). This appears to be in direct correlation with the declarations made about Jesus in the book of Revelation - "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing." (Rev 5:12)

I would like to put it to you that within Solomon’s request for wisdom and what God granted him lies a shadow and revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. The bible in 1 Kings 3:12 records God’s response as follows: “I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.”

Jesus is the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, there will never be another like him. In Luke 11:31, Jesus made this statement, “the Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here.” My prayer is that we shall continue to arise and seek with fresh hearts the wisdom of God which is Christ Jesus.

A good prayer to adopt is one Paul said in his letter to the Ephesians:

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.  I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
