What is salvation?
Do I need to be good to be saved?
How good do I need to be to live a saved life?
What about all the good or bad things that I do?
In this week’s video titled “Good works”, we go back to the fundamentals of salvation.
In Mathew 1:21, at the time of Mary’s conception, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said “Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.” (KJV)
We see here the announcement of salvation!
As Jesus went about in his ministry, it was evident to the leaders at the time that He was no ordinary man. The signs, wonders and miracles that followed him were to point men to their most critical need – salvation, eternal life.
Jesus came to save the world. To reconcile sinful man back to a holy God.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” – John 3:16-18 (NKJV)
Since that time to this day, all that believe in him and call on his name are saved.
Regardless of what the world says, the only standard given by scripture for men to be saved is – to believe in Jesus. By this, men cross from death to life and are brought into relationship with God (Romans 10:9-10, Ephesians 2).
In his conversation with Nicodemus from John 3, Jesus goes on to say, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Jesus was given to the world by God as a gift. Salvation is received by believing in the one God gave by His Grace. Not by works, or self-effort. There was nothing, and there is still nothing you and I could do to obtain such a glorious gift except to simply believe and receive.
